Use of Meaningful Cultural Content to Improve Emotional Engagement in Learning English Online
In this paper, I explore how to create OLEs effectively to help K-12 immigrant students learn English with cultural content. Learning in OLEs can be facilitated through making learners engage in activities. In this paper, I propose that meaningful cultural content and tasks related to learners’ real lives can make learners engage emotionally. To investigate learners’ emotional engagement in the OLE, surveys and analysis of online learning activities, along with measurement of learning outcomes, will be implemented.
Learners’ Engagement in an Online English Learning Environment Integrated with Cultural Content and Facebook: Focus on Design by Learning Theories
In this study, I propose guidelines for designing OLEs to teach English with cultural content based on learning theories. I discuss how select elements from four learning theories such as behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism and connectivism can be applied when designing an OLE. For example, meaningful learning theory from cognitivism plays a key role in designing and organizing learning content and tasks in this study. Although I understand that it is not quite possible for me apply all the perspectives from the four learning theories to designing OLEs, I believe that each learning theory provides a foundation when I design and make learning content in OLEs.
English Learning in an Online Learning Environment Integrated with Cultural Content: Focus on Intercultural Communication
In this paper, I propose cross-cultural communication activities in OLEs. Long-standing cross-cultural communication methods have been pen pals and key pals. However, the development of technology now enables K-12 students to communicate more effectively and collaboratively with audio, pictures, and videos. For example, the students can communicate with other students from other countries through Voicethread. In this paper, I explore how to organize cross-cultural communication activities in OLEs.

Design Guidelines for an Online Learning Environment to Teach English with Cultural Content
I worked with Dr. Chanmin Kim to develop guidelines to create online learning environments (OLEs) to teach English online with cultural content. In this paper, we propose four guidelines to make OLEs effective and engaging to teach English with cultural content: cultural reflection activities, meaningful cultural content, real-life related cultural tasks and online communities.
